Illegal Drugs: Are They Harmless?
Do you have sore eyes? Nope, he replied.
Somebody died? Nope, he replied. Damn! Wouldn't
you care telling me? You really look terrible! I
finally exclaimed. Honestly, its because of this.,
showing his palm and just stared at me blankly.
The drug problem among the Filipino youth has
worsened. Even here at Pagadian City, 7-8 out of 10
youth gets involved in illegal drugs. Dr. Jose P.
Rival said, The Filipino youth, are the hope of our
nation! Okay! That was sweet! But, how can we be
rest-assured that the youth of today can run and
govern our nation in the future when a few of us
prefer to live a very dangerous life, living with
dangerous and illegal drugs!
What are these illegal drugs anyway? Illegal Drugs
come in various forms. It can be taken orally,
injected, smoked, sniffed or inhaled. There are
different kinds of drugs:
Stimulant - An agent that produces a temporary
increase of the functional activity or efficiency of
an organism or any of its parts. You may experience
increased alertness, excitation, increased pulse rate
& blood pressure, insomnia, and loss of appetite.
Excessive use may result to agitation, increased body
temperature, hallucinations, convulsions and, possible
death.
Hallucinogen - A substance that induces
hallucinations. User may experience having illusions &
hallucinations, altered perception of time & distance.
Larger doses may result to longer and more intense
"trip" episodes, psychosis and, possible death.
Narcotic - A drug that in moderate doses dulls the
senses, relieves pain, and induces profound sleep but
in excessive doses causes stupor, coma, or
convulsions; or a drug (as marijuana or LSD) subject
to restriction similar to that of addictive narcotics
whether physiologically addictive and narcotic or not.
Cannabis - Any of the preparations or chemicals that
are derived from the hemp and are psychoactive.
Possible effects would be Euphoria, relaxed
inhibitions, increased appetite and disorientation and
when overdosed, the user experiences fatigue, paranoia
and possible psychosis.
Here are some causes why young people in Pagadian City
get involved in drug addiction/ trafficking:
- Peer-pressure may be due to bad company.
- Lack of Education (includes ignorance and
illiteracy)
- Unemployment/ Poverty
- Depressed problems not expressed.
And, before it manipulates innocent young people and
produces hundreds of its users, it has to begin within
the household. Parents on the other hand play a very
variant role on guiding their kids. Parents should
always be sensitive with their children's emotional
needs. Local governments also can do a big role to
reduce such cases regarding illegal drug trafficking.
Organizing sports activities, drug symposiums that
enable the people be aware of how dangerous what
illegal drugs can do.
Well, it really doesn't make sense if we all just rely
on the people around if we ourselves don't inflict the
rules. Decision-making does eventually play a great
part in helping minimize these obstructions in the
society. Now that we know how ugly and surprisingly
stupid it can make us, its up to us if we want to
look like my friend and just live in the doomed life
illegal drugs has in store for us.
