Pagadian Police Blames ‘Rido’ Of Recent Killings

THE PHILIPPINE National Police–Pagadian City has pointed to “rido” or family feud as cause of most of the recent killings in the city. In a local radio program, City chief of police Michael Palermo said that based on their investigations,

disputes among Muslim families surfaced as the most likely reason of the recent murders. He cited the case of Mohaliden Pacman “Steve” Tapodoc, a candidate for councilor in Labangan town who was killed by unidentified assailants on board a motorcycle near the Filipinista Church at the back of city hall.

“Two years ago, there was already an attempt on his life, knowing the culture of Muslims…” he said. And most of the victims were involved in previous disputes, it does necessarily follow that the killings happening now when elections are coming are poll related, he added.

He also asked why the incidents are raised only recently when elections are approaching. “Why are the previous shooting incidents only being blown–up today?” he said.

As to why there are still no apprehended suspects, he said that not a single complainant has ever approached them regarding the murders. “In the course of our investigation, no complainant ever came to our station. Nobody dared to come to us from family members of the victims to complain about the shooting incidents,” he stressed.

He further said that he was able to convince a witness in the slaying of Rose Pagente, operations manager of the National Food Authority in the province who was killed last Jan. 11 near a PNP checkpoint along the National Highway in Brgy. Tiguma, this city. He added that the PNP and NBI will jointly conduct the investigation.

National Bureau of Investigation–Pagadian City Chief Eric Distor has also asked why there are no complainants on the series of killings. “Why aren’t the families of the victims approaching police authorities for investigation? We cannot prosecute or start the investigation if there is no complainant,” he said.

With regard to Roxas’ statement tying up the killing incidents in the city to the Maguindanao Massacre, NBI Chief Distor said that “it’s a normal reaction of national figures.”

“Full information ba ang na-disclose sa kanya? Or maybe he’s misinformed,” Distor said.
Palermo also expressed the same sentiment. “As far as I know, the ones in the national government don’t know what’s really happening in our locality,” he said.
