THE BUREAU of Fire Protection (BFP) said it is bent on penalizing owners of boarding houses, dormitories or any business establishment who would not still comply with fire safety laws after being inspected and given a grace period to correct the deficiencies.
He also said that other dormitories have insufficient number of firefighting equipment and defective emergency lighting system. Morales laments that apart from these defects, owners of most boarding houses inspected failed to show their business permits, another violation of city rules and regulation.
The fire marshal further said they have noted the deficiencies during their fire safety inspection and after-mission reports, which were acknowledged by the owners for correction before the next inspection. BFP after-mission report may include inspections done on an establishment’s automatic fire suppression system, fire walls, building service equipment, hazardous areas, lighting and emergency lights, area of safe refuge, exit and safety signs, and alarm system.
At present, Pagadian City has 21 hotels, 33 dining establishments, 15 banks, 61 elementary and secondary schools and 15 colleges. Boarding houses and dormitories were estimated by the BFP to be between 50-60, which according to Morales, will be the concentration of routine inspection for the whole year, as the BFP has started implementing RA 9514, the localization of collections of fire code fees just this January.
Another information relayed by SFO3 Beinvenido Chavez of the BFP provincial office says that they have assessed a total of 4,375 permits in 2009, conducted about 2,346 fire safety inspections, reviewed a total of 1,269 building plans, gave 124 lectures on fire safety and organized 67 volunteer fire brigades around the province. - BROUGHT TO YOU BY PAGADIAN EXPRESS
