CITY POLICE Chief Inspector Michael Palermo is urging Pagadian City schools to continue or resume the implementation of the Random Drug Testing (RDT) imposed on private and public academes nationwide by then President Gloria Arroyo.
Palermo’s call came amidst reports drug pushing and abuse have penetrated the city’s secondary schools and colleges as the police chief praised the recent initiative of Medina College which conducted its RDT last July 12 to 194 male and female students.
Leo Glenn Lagnason, dean of student affairs of Medina College, said the number of randomly picked students represent only 35 percent of their college’s total populace.
However, because of the confidentiality of the results, he refused to divulge how many among those tested turned out positive.
Lagnason added that most of those recommended to undergo RDT are senior nursing students who are about to perform their duties in various hospitals in the city.
He said that those found positive will be dealt with disciplinary action, placed under strict monitoring, given information and guidance as added if there were students found positive in the past, most were not Pagadian City residents.
“What Medina College did was a good example so that we will be able to identify who are drug dependents and assess also how far the campaign against illegal drugs has gone”, Palermo said.
Palermo was referring to the campaign against illegal drugs in the province initiated by then Gov. Aurora Cerilles tasking the PNP and all other enforcement agencies to run after drug lords and drug dealers.
The police chief reiterated that other schools should imitate Medina Colleges by subjecting their students to RDT as he disclosed he found one school in Pagadian “na may pusher na, may user pa”.
“Alam nyo na siguro kung sino kayo. Sana gawin nyo rin ang RDT sa school nyo baka pagdating ng araw wala nang magulang na magpapaaral sa anak sa school nyo”, Palermo said.
To students, Palermo has this unsolicited advice: “Take the opportunity to study and stay away from drugs”.
To recall, in an interview last year, DepEd Zambosur Division Superintendent Vizminda Serrato hailed RDT and said, “It is a vital step in protecting students from dangerous drugs and to provide victims with assistance and help them from further abusing shabu.”
Cerilles, now congresswoman of the second district and was first to crack the whip on the drug menace also said that she is still supporting the move with full energy as in the past.
Husband, Gov. Antonio Cerilles, likewise told this paper the fight against illegal drugs will continue during his term as the province’s chief executive even as he said he will cast an iron hand against its proliferation with the help and support of the PNP, PDEA, LGUs, concerned NGOs and the community.
